The benefits of exercising

Balancing the number of calories you expend through exercise and physical activity with the calories you eat will help you achieve your desired weight. The key to successful weight loss and improved overall health is making physical activity a part of your daily routine. Exercising can be varied and fun, 1/2 hour a day is recommended, start gently and build it up over time.

It’s important to add muscle to your body, why? Because muscle burns up calories 18 times faster than fat does on your body. So, add more muscle, your metabolism is increased, and you can burn off more calories per day.

Walking

Our favourite basic exercise, whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced exerciser is walking! Walking is a great way to get active, you can do it almost anywhere and it's FREE! So if you are just starting out exercising, walk, walk and walk.

Join a gym

Joining a local gym or health club is a good way to go if you feel you'd like someone to structure an exercise programme for you. They will have qualified fitness instructors that can map out a fitness and strength-training programme.

Weight training

Pumping iron has many benefits when it comes to weight loss. While the aerobic activities outlined above are great fat burners, weight training is a great muscle toner, and muscle builder. Building and toning muscle has several benefits.

Swimming

Swimming is an excellent exercise for building fitness, burning fat and overall body toning. You need to have access to a good pool and like walking, should aim for about 3 sessions of 20 minutes or more each week.

Jogging

This is an excellent form of exercise for improving fitness and burning fat, however a word of warning, jogging places significant stress on ankle, knee and hip joints as well as lower back.

Cycling

Like walking, cycling offers you the ability to get out in the fresh air and enjoy the scenery while getting some good exercise. Cycling can be tackled at a leisurely pace or at a furious pace for a really good workout.
